Electric Vehicles (EVs) Cut Oil Demand
Increased EV adoption avoided 2.3 million barrels of oil consumption per day in 2025, a figure expected to double to 5.25 million barrels per day by 2030. Electric car sales accounted for over 10% of total 2025 sales in 39 countries compared to just four countries in 2019, with the largest gains in sales in Asian markets including China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Energy Transition
TotalEnergies and Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy firm Masdar formed a $2.2 billion joint venture to manage 9 gigawatts of clean energy capacity across nine Asian countries by 2030. The partnership combines 3 gigawatts of operational assets with a 6 gigawatt pipeline of solar, wind, and battery storage projects in nations including Indonesia, South Korea, and Uzbekistan to meet the region’s accelerating electricity demand with renewables. France announced 10 gigawatts of offshore wind renewable energy tenders, accelerating progress towards the country’s 2035 target of 15 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity. Matrix Renewables is partnering with France’s largest utility, EDF, to develop a 1 gigawatt hour battery energy storage project in Scotland. The project, to be completed in 2027, is set to become one of the UK’s largest storage facilities. The battery will discharge clean energy during peak demand and support Matrix Renewables’ objective to develop 3 gigawatts of UK capacity across renewable generation and energy storage in coming years. Green Mobility and Sustainable Fuels
Polish hydrogen producer Hynfra and Danish clean energy company Topsoe began front-end engineering design (FEED) for a $1 billion green ammonia facility in Jordan, targeting 100,000 tons of annual ammonia production by 2030. If built, the facility would avoid 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. [Zawya]
Toyota announced a partnership to join Volvo Group and Daimler Truck as an equal shareholder in hydrogen fuel cell developer Cellcentric, aiming to accelerate the mass production of zero emission heavy-duty vehicles. This collaboration leverages the combined scale of three global automotive players to drive down fuel cell system costs and catalyze the development of the hydrogen infrastructure necessary to decarbonize long-haul freight. US-based electric aerospace firm BETA Technologies and the UK’s largest regional airline Loganair launched Scotland’s first real-world electric flight demonstrations, transporting mail across Scotland’s regional airport network. The partnership utilizes BETA Technologies’ all-electric aircraft to validate the commercial feasibility of electric cargo aviation, as the Royal Mail postal service works towards its 2040 net zero target. Amazon and the US Department of Energy launched a partnership to recover critical minerals from waste streams, strengthening domestic clean energy supply chains. The partnership focuses on converting used textiles into battery-grade graphite and extracting gallium from end-of-life electronics, leveraging Amazon's logistics and AI capabilities to scale mineral recovery for EV batteries and advanced electronics. Global building materials leader Holcim and Sweden’s SaltX Technology announced a partnership to construct Europe’s first fully electrified cement plant by 2028. Australian circular tech startup Samsara Eco announced plans to build a 20,000 metric ton commercial facility in Southeast Asia by 2028, using AI systems to optimize biological enzymes for complex plastics recycling. Google, McKinsey, and Meta contracted 130,000 tons of carbon removal credits over a 10-year period to reforest degraded Appalachian mining and agricultural land. Project developer Living Carbon plans to restore native ecosystems on former coal sites to demonstrate a potentially scalable sequestration model, with an estimated 31.6 million acres of degraded agricultural and mining sites across the US viable for carbon dioxide removal. The H&M Group released its 2025 sustainability report, revealing a $298 million investment in decarbonization and material innovation as well as more than a 34% emissions reduction across Scope 1-3 against a 2019 baseline.
